By 2022 the German government aims to have shut down the country's nuclear power plants. The expansion of the renewable energy sector is proceeding at full speed as wholesale electricity prices slump.
Conventional energy carriers are no longer lucrative. Some operators of conventional plants are making losses amounting to billions of euros. Energy giant E.ON is reacting to the changes in the industry and splitting in two.
